The third and final book is the best of the trilogy. Interesting characters and beasts are introduced. The prophecy is not revealed until the very end, so it kept my interest high. I laughed, I cried, I cheered. I think this series would make an exciting magical movie trilogy!
It's been a while in coming but the last installment of the War Chronicles is worth the wait. 'Warlord' really is an epic third book, with the fate of the entire cosmos resting on Lirak's shoulders.
The battle scenes are action packed and non-stop, at least in the second half of the book. (The dragons in particular are awesome.) The romantic tension between Lirak, Mayrie and Lorei is well done, if somewhat aggravating from a reader's perspective--by which I mean that the author does a great job of making us feel Lirak's agonizing choice between the two women in his life. So, not only does Warlord work on an "epic fantasy" scale, it also satisfies on an emotional level.
And, where many fantasy stories have unoriginal, run-of-the-mill magic systems, the War Chronicles 'kinai' system is a really well done variation on the 'ley line' approach to magic. Really cool.
If I say any more I might give away spoilers, which I don't want to do. So I'll just conclude by saying that this is a very satisfying last installment to a great series, worth reading for fans of epic fantasy.
First books were promising, interesting and somehow mysterious. The concluding book is simply overloaded with feelings, guilt, psychodramas and the final struggle makes little sense. Instead of action the book is focused on self pity of the main character- for me a little disappointment.
